Bring back the Windows 8 Start menu, say 1.5 million Pokki downloaders

Pokki launched its Windows 8 Start menu replacement back in early October and the company has revealed today that it has been downloaded 1.5 million times for the new OS. The download figures for Pokki, which also adds an app store for hundreds of desktop apps built on its platform, show that there’s a demand for a traditional Start menu on Windows 8 — something that Microsoft removed in its latest OS that has sold 60 million licenses so far . Microsoft’s Windows 8 Start button removal last year was described by the company as a reaction to telemetry data that showed Start menu usage was dropping. Pokki’s own data suggests that its users open the Start menu replacement 10 times a day on average. Pokki isn’t sharing exact Windows 8…

UK supermarket Sainsbury’s to launch own-brand video streaming service

British supermarket chain Sainsbury’s is partnering with digital entertainment provider Rovi to launch a new video streaming service. Part of the company’s Sainsbury’s Entertainment division, the service — slated to launch “later this year” — will be a rebranded version of the white-label Rovi Entertainment Store , which integrates with a number of content providers and rights management services, including the universal DRM locker UltraViolet. According to a press release, new titles will be added to the store “often on the same day they are available on DVD and Blu-ray Disc.” While the service will initially be available only through the Sainsbury’s Entertainment website, the supermarket has plans to expand the offering to portable…

Mountain Lion is Apple’s ‘most successful’ OS X release with three million downloads in four days

Apple’s recently released OS X 10.8, codenamed Mountain Lion , is officially the California company’s most successful OS X release to date. Totalling more than three million downloads in its first four days of availability, it overshadows OS X 10.7 Lion — the prior version of the operating system, which was also the first to be made available via a direct download from the Mac App Store. Lion was already the fastest-spreading OS X upgrade in Apple’s history, thanks to that direct distribution method, and the cheaper and universally better Mountain Lion seems to be keeping that momentum going.

BlackBerry App World surpasses three billion total downloads

RIM has just a bit of good news to share after revealing a $518 million operating loss last quarter and plans for 5,000 job cuts : the BlackBerry App World has reached the three billion download mark. To get to that number, users have been downloading apps at a clip of six million per day from the store’s selection of 90,000 apps. Of course, the numbers all pale in comparison to Apple’s iTunes App Store — 30 billion downloads from a selection of 650,000 apps — and the Google Play Store — 20 billion downloads from 600,000 apps — but the numbers aren’t bad for RIM, which was late to the app game. The BlackBerry App World took 768 days to attain one billion downloads, 210 days to get to two billion, and then 176 days to make it to..

RIAA: Digital beats out physical for first time in 2011, streaming services gain 300,000 subscribers

The RIAA has released its statistics on digital and physical music sales for 2011, and it has confirmed that downloads have beat out physical for the first time, eeking just over the 50 percent mark. Total US music shipments were up for the first time since 2004, with a 3.5 percent gain to 180 million units, though that increase mostly came from digital, which had an increase of 11.3 percent year-over-year. Notably, the digital market appears to have shifted a bit towards full album downloads over singles. Album downloads increased by 22.1 percent over the year, compared to a growth of 10.9 percent for singles

iOS App Store serves 25 billion downloads

Apple has just delivered its 25 billionth app through the iOS App Store, and once again, one lucky person’s just won a $10,000 App Store gift card. Of course, there may be no objective law that says 25 billion downloads are more noteworthy than 25 billion-plus-one downloads, but in the spirit of honoring a heap of uninterrupted zeroes to the left of the decimal, we’ll concede that 25,000,000,000 does in fact contain a lot of zeroes. The milestone comes in less than three years since the App Store hit the one billion download mark , and just under four years since it initially launched on July 10th, 2008.

Fully-fledged uTorrent app for Android in development, has no ETA

We’ve all gone mobile since BitTorrent started bringing media and (ill-gotten) files to us in 2001, but the popular uTorrent client has so far stuck stubbornly to the desktop. It appears that might not be the case for much longer — TorrentFreak reports that uTorrent developers are working on a full version of the program for Android. No, this isn’t just the uTorrent Remote app that lets you control your file sharing on your computer — like some apps already out there, this would be a complete experience that would see users seeding and leeching from their Android devices. The prospect of torrenting on your phone might sound crazy, but when you think about devices like the Asus Transformer Prime — which can function as a computer… Continue reading…

TorrentFreak lists 2011′s top ten pirated movies

TorrentFreak has released its top ten chart of the most downloaded movies worldwide of 2011, and, as usual, it’s difficult to make any solid conclusions from it. It’s headlined by Fast Five , with The Hangover Part II and Thor rounding out the top three. The top ten list looks to be skewed by young male tastes. Films like Harry Potter , Twilight , and Pirates of the Caribbean , which were in the top five by international gross, appear to have scored much lower as their advantage of appealing to wide audiences may have been negated. The appearance of low-grossing films like Sucker Punch , 127 Hours , and Source Code are also a clue of the demographics of pirates

How to Read Body Language to Reveal the Underlying Truth in Almost Any Situation [Communication]

You’ve likely heard that body language accounts for up to 55% of how we communicate, but reading non-verbal cues isn’t just about broad strokes. The same gesture can indicate a number of different things depending on context. In this post, we’re going to take a look at three common situations in which non-verbal cues are especially important—detecting lies, going on a date, and interviewing for a job—then explain how to interpret body language more accurately so that you can read between the lines when a person’s words aren’t necessarily conveying the way that they honestly feel.
