Warren Buffet vs goldbugs

Warren Buffet thinks buying gold is dumb: specifically, he thinks that buying gold is speculation, not investing, because gold doesn’t do anything productive. Here, he waxes eloquent on the subject: “If you put your money into gold or other non-income- producing assets that are dependent on what someone else values that in the future, you’re

New strain of avian flu in China is deadlier to humans than birds, researchers report

Researchers in Japan and the US have analyzed the genes of a new strain of avian (bird) flu that’s killed at least 17 people in China in recent weeks, and discovered that some of the new H7N9 viruses have mutated to be more effective and deadlier in humans than they are in birds. The findings “raise concerns regarding their [the virsues'] pandemic potential,” according to the researchers, who published their findings in a paper in the journal Eurosurveillance last week. President Obama signs cybersecurity order

President Obama on Tuesday signed a new cybersecurity executive order, allowing the government to share more information it has on so-called national “cyber threats” with private companies, namely infrastructure providers. The executive order expands upon a voluntary cyber threat information-sharing program already in place — the ” Enhanced Cybersecurity Services program” (PDF) launched in May 2012 under the Departments of Defense and Homeland Security as part of a larger initiative for information sharing between the government and defense contractors, known as the ” Defense Industrial Base Cybersecurity Activities (PDF) .” Participation in that program has gone up and down, though, with 17 companies joining initially only for five to… Continue reading…

Apple smartwatch could be ‘beyond experimentation phase,’ says Bloomberg

Following reports on a possible Apple smartwatch by the Wall Street Journal and the New York Times, Bloomberg is the latest reputable source to weigh in with its own take . According to the new report, Apple has a team of around 100 people working on the smartwatch, and Bloomberg ‘s sources say that the size of the team suggests the project is “beyond the experimentation phase.” Apple’s senior director of engineering James Foster is said to be working on the smartwatch with others who contributed to previous iOS devices; two people told Bloomberg that the smartwatch “may perform some of the computing tasks now handled by the iPhone and iPad.” Continue reading…

Sheriff’s department asks media to stop tweeting as Christopher Dorner manhunt reaches bloody climax

As the manhunt for fugitive ex-LAPD officer Christopher Dorner nears a potential conclusion in Big Bear Lake, California, the San Bernardino Sheriff’s Department has asked media in the area to immediately stop tweeting. The department claims that tweets are endangering officers on the scene, and while no explanation was given for how tweets could be impacting the standoff, it’s possible that Dorner is following events on Twitter. The department has also asked local media with helicopters not to zoom in too close with cameras on the cabin Dorner is suspected to be hiding in, suggesting that it’s trying to minimize live coverage of the events.

Eric Schmidt reportedly calls China hacking campaigns ‘sophisticated and prolific’ in new book

The relationship between Google and China has grown increasingly contentious , and in a new book former CEO Eric Schmidt reportedly has some harsh words for the country. The Wall Street Journal reports that it has seen preliminary galleys of The New Digital Age , written by Schmidt and Google Ideas director Jared Cohen. In the book, the pair reportedly call China “the world’s most active and enthusiastic filterer of information” — something Google has had to deal with firsthand in recent years. The book also states that China operates “sophisticated and prolific” hacking campaigns targeting foreign companies. Concerns about the latter have been a particular point of focus this week, with both The New York Times and The Wall Street..

Why Nintendo’s Wii Mini is out of touch with the internet and the future

Nintendo may have recently released a brand new console with the Wii U, but that doesn’t mean that the original Wii is dead just yet. In the Wii U’s first week of availability it moved 400,000 units in the US compared to 300,000 for the Wii. That’s only 175,000 fewer units than the Wii sold in the US during its debut week — for whatever reason, people are still buying the thing. In an attempt to create some more interest in the seven-year-old console, Nintendo today announced the smaller, sleeker Wii Mini , with a suitably small $99.99 price tag

T-Mobile stores now stocking iPhone 5-friendly nano-SIMs for those with unlocked devices

We reported a few weeks ago that T-Mobile had no intention of letting the iPhone 5′s smaller nano-SIM card interfere with its newly-bolstered plans to woo unlocked iPhone owners over to its network, and now we’ve received confirmation that the carrier’s stores have begun receiving stock of the new SIM cards. Several T-Mobile stores in New York City informed us that the diminutive SIM cards were delivered today, but if you’re interested in moving your iPhone 5 to T-Mobile you would do best to call your local store first: a couple of locations told us that it would take a day to add the cards to their inventory. Stock also appears to be limited at this point — one store employee said they had ten nano-SIMs available. T-Mobile’s least… Continue reading…

Samsung memo to employees: ‘disappointed’ by verdict

Samsung took quite the blow in its case against Apple last week when the jury awarded nearly every decision in Apple’s favor. In addition to the public statement Samsung released after the decision was announced, the Korean company quickly issued an internal memo to its employees. Unsurprisingly, Samsung reiterates its stance that it does not agree with the jury’s decision, and that it feels “that the consumers and the market will side with those who prioritize innovation over litigation.” “…they had been one of our most important customers.” Apple has long used Samsung components in its products, and Samsung is quick to point this out in the top of its memo to employees. Of note, it states that Apple “had been one of our most..

Born Standing Up, by Steve Martin

I’ve always admired Steve Martin. He’s smart, funny, and avoids engaging in the kind of behavior that ends up in celebrity tabloids. (He’s also a terrific banjo player.) I recently read his autobiography, Born Standing Up, and now I admire him even more. This short book is about Steve Martin’s career as a stand-up comic,
