YouTube co-founder readying new ‘video-based’ collaboration project

In 2006, Chad Hurley and YouTube’s other co-founder Steve Chen were presented with a $1.65 billion buyout offer from Google. In the years since accepting that massive lump of Mountain View stock, Hurley has remained fairly quiet — he stepped down as YouTube’s chief executive in 2010 but stuck around in an advisory role. Now he’s finally readying his next project for a public debut, and Hurley is unsurprisingly sticking with the medium that first brought him enormous success. Nearing the launch of yet another “video-based” service, he insists the upcoming offering won’t be a direct threat to YouTube. Instead, as reported by Adweek , he told a SXSW crowd it will focus on collaboration by providing “flexibility for people to work together…

Meg Whitman: Google and Motorola could lead to a closed Android

Onstage at HP’s global partner summit in Las Vegas, while re-iterating the company’s commitment to an open webOS , CEO Meg Whitman told the crowd she believes that there is still room in the market, stating: “I think there is room for another operating system. iOS is great but it is a closed system. I think that Android may end up as a closed system because of [Google’s] relationship with Motorola.” While Whitman may be on to something that the Google Motorola merger has the potential to fundamentally change the nature of Android, it seems like quite a stretch to suggest it could lead to a closed OS. Also, while the enthusiast community has been having a great time with open webOS for the past couple of months, it’s now just another… Continue reading…

Kenko Tokina 400mm f/8 mirror lens for Sony NEX and Micro Four Thirds out in Japan this week

Kenko Tokina announced recently that it’ll be making lenses for the Micro Four Thirds standard, and it hasn’t taken long to see the first fruits of the collaboration — a 400mm f/8 mirror lens will be released in Japan this Thursday, along with an E-mount version for Sony’s NEX system. Kenko Tokina already makes this lens for Canon, Nikon, Sony Alpha, and Pentax SLR mounts, and pricing is expected to be around ¥22,000, or about $290. That’s certainly on the cheap side, but this isn’t exactly a standard super-telephoto. This is a mirror lens, meaning that light bounces around inside the barrel rather than passing through curved glass elements

‘Virtual projection’ blends AR and motion tracking technique for remote control screen sharing

You know how a standard Nintendo Wii remote works, right? In addition to an accelerometer, there’s a set of infrared LEDs in front of your TV, and a camera inside the remote which tracks your position relative to the lights. Now, imagine substituting a smartphone for your Wii remote, and instead of just transmitting position, you beam your phone’s screen to the monitor as well. That’s what “virtual projection” is all about
